What Is a VersaClimber?

For those of you who don’t know, the VersaClimber is a piece of fitness equipment that has been ruling the cardio equipment sector for more than three decades since 1981.

The manufacturer has released various models of which the LX model comfortably sits between the SM and H models when you analyze it from the pricing point of view.

The VersaClimber is a machine that was designed with the primary intention of bringing you the outdoor climbing experience.

Just like your exercise bike, you have two pedals and two handles, but in this equipment, you are required to stand upright on the two pedals and hold onto the pair of handles provided.

The best thing about this climber is that you have to push the pedals using your feet and move the handlebars with your hands to work out.

The resistance offered depends primarily on how fast you pedal, and hence, the machine moves as fast as you do the action. So, enjoy climbing over this exercise equipment at your own pace.

How Does a VersaClimber Work?

The VersaClimber mimics your climbing experience, is designed with a set of pedals and handles that move up and down.

There are two types of climbing patterns configured by manufacturers—standard or control-lateral.

In the standard climbing pattern, the elbows and knees on either side of the body go up and down together. Whereas, in the control-lateral climbing pattern, the elbows and knees situated on the opposite sides of the body go up or down together.

Are you reminded of someone else’s action in the design principle used here? Yes, it is exactly like how an infant crawls on the floor. Hence, the control-lateral pattern is also called the cross-crawl pattern.

The control-crawl pattern is also more preferred by physiotherapists than the standard pattern as it mimics our natural ways of running, walking, and crawling.

The VersaClimber is the only climbing machine that has effectively implemented the cross-crawl pattern in a climbing machine.

What I Like About VersaClimber LX

1. Compact and occupies a small footprint. You don’t need to about the space problem as the VersaClimber LX has the smallest possible footprint, and it is a wall-mounted VeresaClimber model.

2. Provides you with the options to do unfamiliar workouts.

3. High-intensity, low-impact workout. The machine remains unbeatable in terms of calorie-burning ability, providing you with more calories burned per square foot. Athletes love this climber for the power-packed workout it offers.

4. Adjustable resistance levels. In general, climbers are recommended for good endurance levels, and this machine can adjust resistance levels from 1-500lb. Such improved resistance offered makes the LX model more preferred than the older models.

5. The LX model is fully assembled. You don’t need to waste any time assembling the product. All that you must do is to keep it upright in your designated home gym space or your professional gym.

6. A dazzling array of upgradeable devices. While the handles provided with the LX model are average, you have the option to upgrade them if you are ready to shell out extra bucks.

If you are ready to spend another couple hundred dollars, you even get to enjoy a branded floor mat that safeguards your flooring from any scratches or sweat that could ruin it.

What I Don’t Like About VersaClimber LX

1. Not much suitable for beginner trainers. It is suggested that you start working out on a much easier machine and then take up the challenges offered by the VersaClimber LX.

Else, you would only be building up on your frustration levels and might even stop exercising altogether.

If you are a gym owner, please ensure to train your beginner trainers using simpler equipment before training them using this machine.

2. Cannot improve your athletic techniques. Although the VersaClimber LX might help you burn calories, you wouldn’t reap many benefits from VersaClimber LX if you are a sportsperson, a long-distance runner, or an endurance athlete, as the movement patterns are extremely irrelevant.

Whereas, if you work out on a treadmill or an exercise bike, the walking, running, and cycling movement patterns seem to sync better with your needs.

3. Expensive. The biggest disadvantage is the pricing of this piece of equipment. Though it is priced around $500 less than the SM version, it costs $1000 more than the H model, which has no commercial warranty.

There are plenty of individuals out there who think not once or twice but ample times before investing in a VersaClimber LX as you can get a dozen Concept2 bikes using which you can run a full-fledged spinning class or enhance your home gym to be fully equipped with barbells and plates using the money that would otherwise be spent on buying this machine.

4. The computer offered with the machine is outdated. While the SM model has a better-updated one as it is a recent release onto the market.

In terms of exercise efficiency, this should not be a problem as most of the programs are not used anyway.

5. Not friendly to tall people. And you should upgrade your handles if you measure over 6’ 3’’ in height.

VersaClimber LX Alternatives

If any of the features or functioning of the VersaClimber LX doesn’t satisfy your requirements, you can always choose alternative models that fit your needs. Some good alternatives to VersaClimber LX include:

  • VersaClimber SM
  • VersaClimber H
  • Rogue Echo Bike

If you choose a VersaClimber for your home gym use, I recommend you go for the H model as you save ample money yet reap the same benefits.

The VersaClimber SM is constructed with better quality materials that guarantee a sturdier frame than the VersaClimber LX model and promote a better range of movements as the machine has been made using less material.

The SM model also has an advanced computer and better warranty compared to the LX model. Make your choice depending on your goal. If your intention is not a climber for home gym purposes, I recommend you be extremely mindful about your purchase.

For commercial purposes, the Rogue Echo bikes are a better choice as they are made with high-quality material, come at an extremely affordable cost comparatively, and promise intense workouts that are quite different from ellipticals and treadmills.

The Rogue Echo bikes could be the perfect choice for bulk purchases. If you wish to purchase the VersaClimber models for commercial use, make a complete comparison between the LX and SM models before choosing.
